BLAST- Artist in residence
We are delighted to have been awarded a grant of €1000 towards the BLAST- Artist in residence programme for schools. The aim of this scheme is to give students in schools all over the country the opportunity to work with a professional artist on unique projects to be planned and developed between the artist, the teacher and the school under the co-ordination of the Sligo Education Centre.
We are thrilled to be working with the artist and illustrator Linda Fahrlin. She has recently illustrated The Great Irish Science Book by Luke O’Neill. Click this link for more examples of her wonderful work https://atlanticartstudios.com/
The theme of our work is based on the past, present and future of Killavil NS and the local area. We have decided to produce a wall mural for the car-park side of the school. We are presently researching aspects of the local area as well as investigating the local flora and fauna. We will have 5 sessions with Linda and most of the planning work will be done in January. We will then pick a couple of warm and sunny days in February to do the actual mural. We are looking forward to working with Linda to learn the process of producing a wall mural.
Last Thursday we started the project by making a 1:2 scaled production of the history of Killavil. On this each pupil picked a theme and did a drawing to represent this. The junior room did a nature walk to observe flora and fauna in the area. They will produce stencils to represent these images and finally paint the images to the wall mural.
Below is the scaled version of part of our wall mural.
